First US HIMARS rocket artillery will arrive in Ukraine by the end of June

Four High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, known as HIMARS, will be supplied to the Ukrainian army by the end of June, head of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley has said.

“By the end of the month, we will transfer HIMARS systems, ammunition and crew for operational use in the defense of Ukraine,” said Milley, the BBC reported on June 15.

Milley noted that the Ukrainian military had successfully completed training to work with these precision multiple launch rocket systems.

The general said that the United States and its allies have already trained 60 Ukrainian troops to work with HIMARS, 420 with M777 howitzers, 300 with M109 self-propelled howitzers, 129 with M113 armored personnel carriers and another 100 with drones.

U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed on June 1 that a new package of U.S. military assistance to Ukraine would include HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems and the ammunition for them.

The Pentagon press service said that the 11th $700 million aid package to Ukraine includes:

  • Four MLRS HIMARS and ammunition for them;
  • Five counter-artillery radars;
  • Two air surveillance radars;
  • 1,000 Javelin anti-tank missiles and 50 Command Launch Units;
  • 6,000 anti-armor weapons;
  • 15,000 rounds of 155 mm artillery;
  • Four Mi-17 helicopters;
  • 15 tactical vehicles;
  • Spare parts and equipment.

The UK has already announced the supply of M270 multiple launch rocket systems to Ukraine. The decision to send the MLRS was approved by the United States, which is the manufacturer of these weapons.
