Aug. 18 marks the 176th day of Russian invasion of Ukraine. After failing to capture Kyiv, the invaders withdrew from northern Ukraine and focused their efforts of seizing Donbas. Civilian targets across Ukrainian cities re-main under sporadic Russian air strikes, while settlements along the Russian border are regularly shelled.
Kherson is the only provincial capital under Russian control. Moscow maintains the occupation of parts of Kherson, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.
During this time, the Kremlin has changed the goals of its war in Ukraine several times. After a failed operation to seize Kyiv and then the retreat of its troops from Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy oblasts, Russian forces concentrated on fighting to seize Ukrainian-controlled regions of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.
Ukrainian troops are counterattacking in some areas and Russian troops are suffering losses.
