Negotiations with Russia will resume once Ukraine gains the upper hand, MP says
“The current pause (in negotiations) makes sense; major battles are underway in the east (of Ukraine); (the pause will hold) until a major shift occurs on the battlefield – naturally, we hope it will be in our favor,” said Arakhamia.
He added that Ukraine’s negotiating position could improve with sufficient quantities of Western weapons flowing into the country.
“Then, with a bolstered negotiating position, we could engage in a new round of talks (with Moscow),” the MP said.
On May 17, Ukrainian Presidential Adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said that Ukraine-Russia talks have been on pause since the late March Istanbul meeting, which failed to produce substantial results. According to Podolyak, negotiations will resume once Moscow becomes reasonable about its war crimes in Ukraine, and accepts Kyiv’s position.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that while Ukraine will emerge victorious on the battlefield, the war will ultimately be concluded through diplomacy.
“There will definitely be talks between Ukraine and Russia,” said Zelensky.
