Biggest piece of amber ever found in Ukraine is unearthed in Rivne Oblast
A chunk of amber found in Rivne Oblast, north-western Ukraine has weighed in at just over 5.3 kilograms, making it the largest piece of the gemstone ever to be unearthed in Ukraine, and one of the ten largest pieces of amber in the world.
News of the amazing discovery was published on Facebook by Head of Rivne Oblast State Administration, Vitaly Koval.
“The biggest piece of amber found to date weighs 9 kilograms and is currently displayed at the Natural History Museum in Berlin,” wrote Koval.

“The amber nugget recently discovered in Rivne Oblast weighs over 5 kilos. The largest amber stones found until recently in Ukraine were ones from the 1930s and 1940s.”
The gemstone was unearthed by company Soniachne Remeslo (Ambertrade TM) at the Volodymyrets-Shidhny amber deposit in the north-west of Ukraine.
“Experts from the State Gemmological Center of Ukraine have confirmed that amber stones weighing over 5 kilograms are extremely rare,” added Koval.
“Only a handful of such amber nuggets can currently be found in museums and private collections around the world.”
