Lotteries, gambling now within competence of Ukraine’s digital ministry, Cabinet says

Ukraine’s government issued a resolution on Aug. 19 transferring oversight of lotteries and gambling to the Digital Transformation Ministry.

Previously, lotteries and gambling were under the oversight of the Economy Ministry.

The government’s Committee on Digital Transformation, Education, Science and Innovation, Health Protection, Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources, Legal Policy, Gambling and Lotteries will also deal with the issue.

Russian-founded bookmaker 1xBet in early April obtained a license from the Gambling and Lottery Regulatory Commission to operate in Ukraine.

Later, a petition posted on the president’s official website demanding a ban on the operation of bookmaker’s in Ukraine gained more than 25,000 votes in a week.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky instructed Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to work out this issue together with law enforcement agencies.
