Occupying Russian forces in Mariupol are attempting to send stolen metal products to Russia, the Mariupol City Council reported on Aug. 18.

According to Deputy Mayor Serhiy Orlov, the invaders are trying to open the port because there are a lot of metal products left there.

"They have already exported 2-3 thousand tons each,” said Orlov.

“They even had criminal showdowns for this metal. Because it's a lot of money.”

Mariupol had previously been one of Ukraine’s industrial centers, with one of the biggest plants in Ukraine being the Azovstal steelworks. Following a Russian siege at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 90% of Mariupol has been ruined, and the Azovstal steelworks is almost entirely destroyed.
