A major rock salt extraction facility is being developed in Zakarpattia Oblast, regional governor Viktor Mykyta said in a Facebook post on Aug. 11.

“Unfortunately, Artemsil – a company in Donetsk Oblast, which supplied 100% of Ukraine’s salt – has ceased its operations due to the war,” Mykyta said, commenting on the urgent need of expanded salt production in the country.

According to Mykyta, Kation Invest is currently developing a rock salt extraction facility near Bushtyn, Zakarpattia Oblast, which would produce as much as 150,000 tons of salt per month.

The project is expected to start producing output in six months, and would be able to cover 100% of Ukraine’s industrial salt needs, as the country’s roads are salted in the winter to combat black ice.

Salt shortages were common during the opening weeks of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but the country currently has enough salt to meet domestic nutritional needs.
