The Swiss believe that the seizure of private Russian assets, stored in Swiss institutions, would contradict its constitution, the Swiss government said on Feb. 15, citing the findings of a working group tasked with that question.
The group came to the conclusion that "the expropriation of private assets of legal origin without compensation is unacceptable under Swiss law."
The confiscation of frozen private assets is "incompatible with the Federal Constitution and the current legal order and violates Switzerland's international obligations.”
"Support for Ukraine will continue regardless of the frozen assets issue," the Swiss government insisted.
On Jan. 25, Switzerland introduced another package of sanctions against about 200 Russian individuals and entities.
