Ukrainian oligarch Medvedchuk's mega-yacht seized in Croatia
A yacht owned by pro-Russian oligarch and politician Viktor Medvedchuk, has been seized by Croatian authorities, the local Novi list online media outlet reported on March 16 with reference to sources in the Croatian law enforcement.
The vessel, a 92-meter long superyacht named Royal Romance and considered to be one of the largest yachts in the world, has been moored in the port of Rijeka in western Croatia, on the Adriatic Sea.
Medvedchuk, who has close relations to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, with the Russian dictator being godfather to one of Medvedchuk’s daughters, was the formal owner of the yacht until March 2021.
It has now been banned from leaving port by Croatian authorities.
The annual cost of maintaining the yacht and traveling is estimated at a staggering $15-20 million.
Medvedchuk's property had been arrested as part of EU sanctions imposed against politicians and officials associated with the Kremlin.
Medvedchuk had been under house arrest since May 13, 2021. on charges of treason against the Ukrainian state, and is said to have escaped his confinement shortly after the commencement of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to a statement made by Interior Ministry Advisor Anton Gerashchenko on Feb. 27.
