Olympic gold medallist at Greco-Roman wrestling and MP from the Servant of the People Party Zhan Beleniuk has said he’s not serving in the military now, but will go to the front if he’s called up.

Beleniuk was speaking an interview with the "How Are You?" project on Dec. 24.

"If I'm called up, I'll go,” the MP said.

“You need to realise that even a trained and, so to speak, a strong man doesn't necessarily possess all the skills a soldier needs to be effective on the front line," the MP said.

After the Olympics, Beleniuk was promoted to the rank of senior lieutenant.

Beleniuk was also asked if MPs had been expecting the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February.

"I didn't know about it,” Beleniuk said.

“We were told about some military confrontation ongoing. I hadn't believed it was possible. Mom teases me now (about not knowing)," he said.

Beleniuk doesn't like talking about his private life, and sidestepped questions about it.

"Officially, I’m not married. I never talk about my private life. (But) my mom has wanted grandchildren for a long time," he said.

Beleniuk’s father died in the civil war in Rwanda when he was 10.

"I never saw my dad, only photos of him," Beleniuk said in the interview.

“We never met. My mom loved him.”
