Kyiv developer releases free game featuring war in Ukraine

Ukraine War Stories, a video game based on a set of visual stories about the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, is now available for download on the games platform Steam.
The game is set in the early months of the full-scale invasion, with each part of its narrative based on a true story. The gameplay is text-based and accompanied by music and illustrations. It also features real photos taken in the towns that are mentioned in the stories.
The game can be downloaded for free, without in-app purchases, here.
There are three visual stories in the game – they feature Hostomel, Bucha, and Mariupol, some of the first towns hit during the invasion. In each of them, players will act as civilians whose only task is to survive, keeping themselves and their loved ones safe and escaping with their lives from the occupied territory.
"But remember: as a civilian, you can only do so much," the developers warn.
The game was created by a small Kyiv-based studio, Starni Games. One of the employees got caught by the Russian invading forces and had to hide in a garage basement for a week with his family until they managed to evacuate. The developers created one of the stories on the basis of his eyewitness account.
The main goal of creating the game is to share Ukrainians’ recent experiences with a worldwide audience.
