Istanbul’s FC Beşiktaş has signed a sponsorship deal with Russia’s Gazprom to facilitate the transfer of Russian football players, Turkish sports outlet Fotospor reported on April 25.

Football players looking to leave the Russian Premier League will transfer to Beşiktaş for free, so the Turkish club can sell them to other teams.

Beşiktaş is set to receive 15%-25% from each transfer, making it a profitable venture for the club. Gazprom has reportedly vowed to turn the team into a perennial Champions League contender.

Beşiktaş Sporting Director Ceyhun Kazancı denied the team has such plans.

“I know nothing about this plan,” he said.

“Is Beşiktaş interested in the Russian Premier Leagues’ players? No, we aren’t interested in them.”
