U.S. actor and writer Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy and in subsequent films and spinoff shows, has come out in support of Ukraine on his Twitter page.

“The force is strong with Zelensky,” the 70-year-old actor wrote, adding a drawing of a lightsaber with a beam painted in the colors of the flag of Ukraine, and the hashtag #StandWithUkraineNow.

Hamil’s tweet quoted another tweet by user @jtp802, who posted a picture of Zelensky in his now trademark olive-green military T-shirt, which this time had a Ukrainian “Tryzub” trident symbol on the left sleeve. An iconic X-wing Starfighter from the film franchise is superimposed on the Tryzub.

The picture was taken on May 4, informally known as “Star Wars Day” as the date echoes the famous line from the films: “May the Force be with you.”

In one of the original film’s best-known scenes, Hamill’s character Skywalker pilots an X-wing as he destroys the evil Galactic Empire’s doomsday weapon – the huge planet-killing space station the Death Star.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on May 8 released a video address to mark the Ukraine’s Day of Remembrances and Reconciliation.
