Monuments to Soviet-era General Nikolai Vatutin and pilot Valery Chkalov will be dismantled in Kyiv in the near future, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy reported on Feb. 7.
The following objects were recognized as not subject to entry into the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine:
- A monument to Vatutin, which is located in the Mariinskyi Park in Kyiv;
- A monument to Chkalov, which is located on Oles Honchar Street in Kyiv.
Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko signed the relevant order.
On Feb. 8, the Real Kyiv Telegram messenger reported that the dismantling of the Monument to Chkalov had already begun.
At the same time, Kyiv City Council member Alina Mykhailova denied these reports.
“The utility workers came today, slightly scratched the pedestal, cordoned it off with a fence, and put a piece of paper that it (monument) would be dismantled soon,” she said.
“Today, the working group must give instructions to the Public Works Department for dismantling. But in any case, this is a matter of the near future.”
