The Ukrainian Institute and UN Women in Ukraine will announce the winners of the fourth “Women in Arts” award on March 7.

The slogan of this year’s ceremony is “The fire doesn’t burn the hardened.” The ceremony will be a special one, as it covers the previous two years.

In 2022, the ceremony was cancelled due to the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, so Women in Arts 2023 has taken on a new meaning, expressed through extending its name with “The Resistance” and in the form of the award itself, whose elements symbolize resistance to the invasion.

The award nominees are presented in eight categories: women in visual arts, women in music, women in theater, women in cinema, women in cultural management, women in cultural journalism, criticism and research, and special mention.

Candidates for the Women in Arts award are evaluated by experts in the relevant field. Professional achievements, reputation, innovation, and national or international recognition are the main requirements for contestants. An expert council and a jury, which includes professionals in their assessment category, representatives of public sector and independent institutions, are invited to take part in the evaluation.

An additional selection criterion of “contribution to victory,” which takes into account activities in the military, volunteer, cultural or any other spheres that directly bring Ukraine’s victory closer is another novelty of this year’s award.

Women in Arts is an independent award founded in 2019 by the Ukrainian Institute and UN Women in Ukraine as part of the HeForShe solidarity movement for gender equality.

The award is aimed at drawing attention to the achievements of women working in the fields of culture and the arts.
