A lyric video by Roxolana, a Ukrainian pop singer and finalist in the Ukrainian selection competitions for Eurovision 2022, has made waves in Ukraine due its inclusive addition of a sign language translation within the video itself.
The video, presenting the lyrics to her submission for Ukraine’s Eurovision selection competition, Girlzzzz, was posted to social media on Feb. 10.
Explaining her choice, Roxolana wrote that she was inspired after recording a different song with sign language-accessible lyrics.
“I got a lot of reviews after last summer I recorded Hovory with the lyrics by Yuri Izdryk in sign language,” the singer wrote.
“So, when I was working on Girlzzzz, I knew I would create an inclusive video. The song’s main message is that everyone should believe in themselves, not be afraid of anything, be free of social pressure and look after themselves and others. I am sure that is our true power.”
The video was created in collaboration with sign language performer Yekateryna Zabotkina.
Ukraine’s National Eurovision Final will take place on Saturday, Feb. 12. Eight Ukrainian artists will be competing and the concert showcasing the contestants submissions, held at the concert hall of the National Aviation University in Kyiv, will be broadcast by Ukrainian public broadcaster UA:Pershyi.
The winner will be chosen by the public and a jury made up of famed Ukrainian music stars Tina Karol, Jamala, and producer Yaroslav Lodygin.
