It was exactly one year ago today — on April 14, 2022 — that the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet found its watery grave after being struck by Ukrainian-made Neptune missiles the day before.
While Russia claims that most sailors aboard survived the ship’s sinking, it is estimated that hundreds of Russian sailors drown after being swallowed by the sea alongside their ship.
The sinking of the Moskva was one the Ukrainian Army’s biggest triumphs. It became legendary after being sent on its familiar course to the bottom of the sea by Ukrainian border guards on Snake Island, who had earlier told the crew “Russian warship, go f*ck yourself”.
The phrase has become one of the war’s most iconic, featuring on everything from shirts and stamps to toys and drinks. Museums have exhibits where you can enact the phrase yourself. It can occasionally be heard as a greeting.
It has also become one of the country’s most popular memes.
Recalling that momentous event one year ago, Ukrainians still rejoice at one of the Ukrainian Army’s greatest successes, while reveling in mocking the Russian “colossus on clay feet”.
