NATO member states have started extensive exercises along the northern coast of the Baltic Sea, rehearsing maneuvers the defensive alliance would carry out in the event of a Russian attack, Estonian news website ERR reported on Sept. 9.
The training scenario includes the deployment of allied forces to the Baltic Sea and amphibious landings in the case of a conflict. Fourteen nations are participating in the exercises, which will involve 3,000 personnel, 30 ships, and 15 aircraft.
Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, the Commander of the German Navy, emphasized the importance of both defensive and offensive capabilities in effectively deterring potential adversaries.
“We’re sending a clear signal of vigilance to Russia,” he said.
These exercises are set to span two weeks, marking the inaugural deployment of the large amphibious ship Mesa Verde, capable of accommodating approximately 800 soldiers and their equipment.
Two Baltic Sea nations, Finland and Sweden, have joined or are in the process of joining NATO, both having long been neutral.
The countries decided to join the defensive alliance after Russia launched its full-scale invasion and war against Ukraine in late February 2022.
