A total of 208 children have been killed and 376 wounded to varying degrees by the Russian military since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine reported on April 21.

The agency noted that these figures are not final, as work is still underway to establish the figures in places that are currently seeing active hostilities, and in temporarily occupied and liberated territories.

Most of the children wounded were in Donetsk Oblast - 119, Kyiv Oblast - 113, Kharkiv Oblast - 91, Chernihiv Oblast - 57, Kherson Oblast - 44, Mykolaiv Oblast - 41, Luhansk Oblast - 36, Zaporizhzhia Oblast - 25, Sumy Oblast - 16, and Zhytomyr Oblast - 15.

The PGO also shared details of the latest child casualties.

Two people, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed in Kherson Oblast on April 20 when a shell hit a residential building in an artillery strike by invading Russian forces. On the same day, as a result of an attack by the Russian army on civil infrastructure in the southern city of Mykolaiv, an 11-year-old girl was wounded.

April 21 is the 57th day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. After being defeated by Ukrainian forces in the north, Russia is still attempting to advance in the east and south, and from the north in Kharkiv Oblast.

Since the first days of the war, the most difficult situations have been seen in Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, and Mariupol. For more than a month, Russia also shelled Kyiv and the outskirts of the capital, completely destroying a number of settlements. Large amounts of evidence has since emerged that Russian troops committed atrocities against the civilians in the areas they controlled.

At the moment, the enemy is trying to seize the parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts that have remained under the control of Ukraine since shortly after the start of the war in 2014. According to Ukrainian and Western intelligence, it has massed its troops for an attack on the Donbas and is conducting probing attacks ahead of a full offensive.

In a video address on April 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the Russian invaders had begun the Battle for Donbas, and had deployed a large part of their army to seize control of more of eastern Ukraine.

Many experts have described the upcoming Battle for the Donbas as perhaps being the most pivotal battle of the war.
