Ukrainian forces free 26 villages in offensive in Oleksandrivskyi sector

Ukrainian forces have liberated 26 villages and retaken 745 square kilometers of territory during a two-stage offensive operation by the Air Assault Forces in the Oleksandrivskyi sector, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on X on Aug. 12, following an update from Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi.
According to the president, the operation ran in two stages from Jan. 29 through August and restored Ukrainian control over territory in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhya oblasts.
“This offensive operation of ours was carried out with precision – exactly as planned,” Zelenskyy said.
How the operation unfolded
Drapatyi provided a stage-by-stage breakdown of the offensive.
The first phase, which began on Jan. 29, led to the liberation of about 400 square kilometers.
The second phase started on May 5 and is still continuing. Within that stage, Ukrainian forces have additionally liberated 490 square kilometers, including 12 settlements — eight in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and four in Zaporizhzhya Oblast.
Separately, Ukrainian units also carried out search-and-destroy actions against enemy groups that had infiltrated the rear zone across another 300 square kilometers, he said.
“Over the course of the operation, 745 square kilometers of territory were liberated. Twenty-six villages in the Dnipro, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia regions were returned to Ukrainian control,” Drapatyi said.
He added that the Air Assault Forces' offensive grouping, made up of four brigades and two assault regiments, had freed an additional 15 square kilometers in the past week alone.
Enemy losses
According to Zelenskyy, Russia lost at least 9,550 troops killed and more than 6,600 wounded during the operation. He also said the offensive helped expand Ukraine’s prisoner exchange fund.
Zelenskyy said he received the report on the results of the offensive and further plans from Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi, General Staff Chief Ihor Skybiuk and Air Assault Forces Commander Oleh Apostol.
“I am proud of the courage of Ukrainian warriors!” the president added.
