Acting defense minister Khmara meets with U.S. NATO envoy

Gen. Yevhenii Khmara, recently appointed acting Defense Minister, met with U.S.
Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker on July 24, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry
said.
Also attending were U.S. chargé d’affaires in Ukraine Sandra Oudkirk and Lt. Gen. Curtis Buzzard, commander of the NATO Security Assistance and Training Initiative for Ukraine (NSATU) and the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U).
“Ukraine is focusing on asymmetric actions and technological solutions. We expect continued strong support from the United States,” Khmara said after the meeting.
Khmara introduced the U.S. delegation to the new military leadership: Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapatyi and Chief of the General Staff Ihor Skybiuk. He said he has “strong synergy and a shared vision of the war” with the new commander-in-chief, citing technological advantage and asymmetric warfare as key elements.
On July 17, Khmara became acting Defense Minister;
before that, he was acting head of Ukraine’s SBU security service. Khmara
replaced Mykhailo Fedorov, who was abruptly dismissed over what President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a prolonged conflict with then-C-in-C
Oleksandr Syrskyi. Syrskyi, in turn, was sacked on July 21, after
days of protests demanding his resignation.
