Russia carried out a double attack on Ukraine, launching a total of 25 missiles in the late evening of May 8 and in the early hours of May 9, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, said on Telegram.
The first barrage of eight Kalibr missiles on the eastern regions of Ukraine was launched from Russia's carriers in the Black Sea at about 10 p.m. on May 8.
The Ukrainian military’s East Operational Command downed all of them.
Then at about 4 a.m. on May 9, Russia sent the next barrage of 17 X-101/X-555 cruise missiles from four Tu-95MS strategic bombers flying in the Caspian Sea region.
Kyiv's air defense shot down all 15 cruise missiles from this barrage that were headed fro the capital.
Debris of intercepted missiles fell in the capital's Shevchenkivskyi and Holosiivskyi districts.
There were no casualties or significant damage reported due to the attack.
"(Russia is) attacking with the highest density and power exactly on May 9!” the head of Kyiv City Military Administration Serhiy Popko reported on Telegram.
“This is a real manifestation of the "Victory" cult (...) The capital's air defense has worked perfectly, again! According to preliminary information, about 15 enemy aerial targets were detected and shot down in the airspace around Kyiv.”
The Kyiv Oblast police have found an eight-meter wide and 2.5 meter deep crater from the explosion in a district of Kyiv Oblast, the region surrounding the Ukrainian capital.
This was the fifth Russian mass attack on Kyiv in the month of May alone. Thirty-five Iranian-made Shahed suicide drones were downed over Kyiv during the previous night.
