Ukraine will receive a new military assistance package from the United States that will include NASAMS, surface-to-air missile systems that will improve the country’s air defense capabilities, said President Volodymyr Zelensky in his nightly video address on July 1.

In addition, more weapons will be arriving to fill the needs of the Ukrainian army.

The president emphasized how much gratitude he feels for these supplies, which come at a time when the nation’s army really needs them.

“I’m especially grateful to the U.S. and to President Joe Biden personally for the assistance package for Ukraine which was announced today,” Zelensky said.

“It includes NASAMS, really powerful missile systems which are able to improve our air defense very substantially. We’ve worked a lot to make these supplies happen.”

NASAMS were developed jointly by Raytheon, a leading U.S. defense manufacturer, and a Norwegian company that possesses cutting-edge technology in missile systems, back in 1998. Their key advantage is the ability to intercept cruise missiles with a high degree of precision. These systems operate AMRAAM rockets, which are capable of auto-targeting functionality.

On June 30, Biden announced a new package of military assistance to Ukraine worth $800 million. It will include air response capabilities and weapons needed for the Ukrainian army’s offensive operations.

Several days earlier, CNN revealed that the White House was preparing such a package, focusing on long-range artillery and the munitions needed for those weapons.

U.S. political news outlet Politico reported that Ukraine’s Armed Forces were already in training to learn how to operate these weapons and missile systems.
