It will take at least two more weeks to exhume bodies from the recently-uncovered mass graves near Izyum, mayor Valerii Marchenko told Ukrainian TV on Sept. 18.

“Experts of the State Emergency Service and other agencies are conduction exhumation,” said Marchenko.

“Bodies will be identified if possible, and transported to Kharkiv for further investigation. This will take at least two more weeks, as there are a lot of graves.”

The mayor added that law enforcement officials are investigating reports about further mass graves in the city.

After Izyum was liberated from six-months-long Russian occupation, Ukrainian authorities found around 450 graves near the city, and a mass grave full of bodies of Ukrainian soldiers.

The work to investigate the site began on Sept. 16. Police experts say the vast majority of exhumed bodies bear marks of violent deaths.
