Berlin blocks Putin bid to make Schröder EU mediator in Ukraine peace talks

Berlin has rejected Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s
proposal that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder mediate talks between
Moscow and the European Union on a peace deal in Russia’s war against Ukraine, Reuters
reported on May 10, citing an anonymous German official.
The official said the idea could not be trusted because
Moscow had not changed any of its conditions.
He also said Putin had put forward a series of proposals
aimed at dividing the Western alliance.
On May 9, Putin told Kremlin propagandists that he wanted
any EU leader who had not “said anything nasty” about Russia to serve as the
bloc’s negotiator with Moscow.
The dictator added that he would accept Schröder as the EU’s
envoy.
Gerhard Schröder served as chancellor from 1998 to 2005 and
led the SPD from 1999 to 2004. After leaving office, he spent years working for
Russian energy companies and is still considered a friend of Putin.
Schröder met with Putin in Moscow several weeks after the
start of the full-scale war and again in July 2022. He insisted after both
meetings that Russia was interested in ending the war.
