U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in person for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, CNN reported on March 2.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G20 Ministers of Foreign Affairs meeting in New Delhi, India.

The talks lasted ten minutes, according to CNN’s source.

Blinken called on the Russian Federation to resume participation in the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Weapons.

Earlier, the U.S. Secretary of State said that the summit was “overshadowed” by the war in Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, this meeting has again been marred by Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine,” Blinken said in remarks after his address at the closed-door meeting.

“We must continue to call on Russia to end its war of aggression and withdraw from Ukraine for the sake of international peace and economic stability.”

Blinken last met with Lavrov one month before Russia’s full-scale invasion began. The meeting was held in Geneva, where Russia presented the United States and NATO with demands for “security guarantees,” including Ukraine’s non-admission tothe defensive alliance.
