Brazil's President responds to Volodymyr Zelenskyy's criticism

17 September 2024, 04:22 PM

Brazil cannot take sides in the Ukraine-Russia war, and those seeking dialogue now should have done so earlier, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, according to Correio Braziliense on Sept. 17.

Lula da Silva's comments came after Ukrainian officials urged him to visit Ukraine and amid criticism from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who responded to Brazil’s invitation to Vladimir Putin for the G20 summit by saying it would violate international law.

Lula emphasized Brazil’s stance of neutrality, stating, "Those who want to talk to us now could have done so before the war started," while Putin has suggested Brazil and India could mediate peace talks.

In a separate interview, Zelenskyy called Brazil’s position on the war "pro-Russian."

China-Brazil peace plan

Brazil and China are urging peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, calling it the "only way to solve the Ukrainian crisis."

Both nations support an international peace conference, endorsed by Russia and Ukraine, with equal participation from all parties and a fair discussion of peace plans.

They also call for adherence to three principles: avoiding battlefield expansion, de-escalating hostilities, and preventing provocations, while emphasizing the importance of preventing the use of nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons.

On June 5, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry responded, asserting that Zelenskyy's peace formula is the only fair resolution to the war.
