Invading Russian forces are using new combat tactics near the city of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast, the chief of the Main Directorate of Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, said in an interview to the business magazine Forbes Ukraine on Feb. 22.

Budanov said that the invaders are throwing infantry into the battle, instead of using artillery and other equipment.

"The shift to different tactics is obvious to everyone in Bakhmut,” Budanov said.

“Vuhledar has given a clear example of this. Wave after wave of infantry is simply coming in Bakhmut, in general. The artillery only supports them, there are only a few armored vehicles. In Vuhledar, they did use armored vehicles, that were destroyed in the first hours, and everything turned into small arms fighting."

Budanov said the invaders are using up a lot of ammunition in the area of Bakhmut.

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian army will continue to defend Bakhmut, although "not at any cost."

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said that holding Bakhmut was a military objective, as the Ukrainian army clearly realizes the defense of the city is depleting Russian resources.
