Ukraine will use Leopard battle tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) at the front in March 2023, German Chief of Defense General Eberhard Zorn wrote on Twitter on Feb. 16.
“I assume that our Leopards and Marders will be in use in Ukraine in March,” he tweeted.
Zorn added that Germany wants to transfer “sustainable” systems with sets of spare parts and ammunition to Ukraine.
On Jan. 6, Germany announced its plans to send about 40 Marder IFVs to Ukraine.
After long hesitation, on Jan. 25, Germany approved the transfer of 14 Leopard-2 tanks to Ukraine, as well as their re-export from partner countries.
On Feb. 7, Berlin issued a license to German military companies to supply Ukraine with 178 Leopard-1A5 tanks. However, it is not known exactly how many tanks will arrive, since their technical condition must first be checked.
