The faction of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) in the European Parliament has called for Ukraine to be immediately granted the status of a candidate for EU membership, rather than the country having to wait until June for this.
“The EU has to grant political protection to Ukraine now,” the party said in a statement. “This includes immediate candidate status. Ukraine has signed its membership (application for) the EU with its blood – it’s our responsibility to murdered Ukrainians to grant it.”
The EU Delegation resumed its work in Ukraine on April 11.
During her visit to Kyiv on April 8, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, handed over a questionnaire to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the compliance of the country with the Copenhagen criteria – a necessary step for obtaining the status of a candidate for accession to the EU.
After Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova also received the questionnaires.
Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine's accession to the EU on Feb. 28. He said that after the full-scale invasion of the Russia, Ukraine would apply to the European Union for immediate accession under a new, special procedure.
On March 21, it was reported that the European Commission had begun working on a decision regarding Ukraine's membership in the EU. According to Zelensky, the decision of the European Commission will be prepared within a few months. It will be a recommendation for the EU Council to decide on the next steps of the accession process for Ukraine.
