Dmitry Ivanov, a member of the regional
parliament of Russia’s Khakassia, elected in 2018 to represent the Communist
Party, was killed fighting in Ukraine, Khakassia Governor Valentin Konovalov
announced in a post on Russian social media website VK.ru on April 25. Ivanov
reportedly joined Wagner
Group PMC in February 2023.
According to the governor, Ivanov was "eliminated while performing a combat mission," but no further details were provided.
While Ivanov is the first Russian official to openly enlist with Wagner Group, he is not the first one to be killed in Ukraine. In October 2022, a regional councilman from Novosibirsk, Dmitry Shmakov, was killed in battle.
