Causalities, sustained by Ukrainian military service personnel during the war, are kept secret to avoid providing Russia with an intelligence advantage, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said during a press briefing on July 14.

“Casualty figures are a state secret under martial law,” said Malyar.

“It’s done for the sake of military expediency, as the enemy could use those figures to their own advantage.”

Malyar also urged fellow Ukrainians to refrain from posting any kind of information of losses, sustained by Ukraine’s armed forces.

“We call on citizens and their movements, who are attempting to make these figures public…: don’t aid the enemy; don’t publish the figures while martial law is in effect,” the deputy minister concluded.
