It was a rough beginning to Dnipro-1’s first foray into the Champions League after the Ukrainian football team went down 3-0 to Greece’s Panathinaikos, before midfielder Volodomyr Tanchyk scored the team’s first-ever Champions League goal in the 90th minute.
Dnipro-1 qualified for the Champions League for the first time after finishing second in last year’s Ukrainian Premier League, behind Shakhtar Donetsk.
After playing its “home” game in Kosice, Slovakia, the team will now travel to Athens, Greece on August 1 for a game they must win by at least two goals if the team hopes to qualify for the Champions League group stage.
Should Dnipro-1 beat Panathinaikos at home by more than two goals, the team would face France’s Marseille on August 8 in the first leg of the third qualifying round.

The earlier incarnation of the Dnipro football team was one of the most successful in Ukraine, qualifying for the 2015 Europa League Final before going bankrupt.
Not officially a successor of that legendary team, Dnipro-1 was first created in 2015, first gaining promotion to Ukraine’s Premier League in 2019.
