The family of MP Hryhoriy Surkis from the Opposition Platform party – a political party now banned in Ukraine – is in Monte Carlo, Ukrainian news website Ukrainska Pravda reported on Aug. 17.

Sources of the publication in political circles said that the Surkis family has settled on one of the most expensive coasts of Europe and has been renting apartments in the five-star Monte-Carlo Bay hotel for many years.

The annual rent for such apartments is about 2 million euros.

According to the outlet, Surkis is regularly seen in the local casino.

At the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Surkis and his brother Ihor both left the country.

The Surkis family departed for Hungary separately in two cars on Feb. 26 between 10.40 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. It is noted that they left without declaring the cash at Ukrainian customs, although $17.6 million in cash was processed at the Hungarian customs point.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the inspectors of the Vylok customs post of Zakarpattya Oblast Customs, who allowed the Surkis brothers out of the country without subjecting them to inspections.

A representative of Hryhoriy Surkis claimed at the time that the parliamentarian had gone to Poland for treatment.
