EU Ambassador to Ukraine Matti Maasikas has visited Mykolaiv, where he met with regional governor Vitaliy Kim and the Mayor of the city Oleksandr Senkevich, according to the photo on his Twitter page with representatives of local authorities and the EU flag on Nov. 21.
"In Mykolaiv, with Governor Vitaliy Kim, Mayor Oleksandr Senkevich and with the EU flag that was torn off when the regional administration building was destroyed by a Russian missile," the ambassador said.
Maasikas also showed the scale of destruction in Mykolaiv as a result of the attacks of the Russian military.
"The destruction Russians have brought on Mykolaiv is enormous: schools, universities, administrative and residence buildings. But first and foremost, hundreds of lost civilian lives," the diplomat said.
He also showed Kim holding a briefing for ambassadors in the bomb shelter of the Art Theater of Ukraine.
Maasikas said even during the Russian air attacks, performances are staged here.
Russian invasion forces have regularly shelled the city, launching rocket attacks on residential and industrial areas. In early November, Mayor Senkevich stated that since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, there had been only 44 days when Russians did not shell Mykolaiv.
After the liberation of the west bank of Kherson Oblast and Kherson city, the number of attacks on Mykolaiv has significantly decreased, but the Armed Forces of Ukraine have said that a threat to the city from the Russians still remains.
Kim said that almost the whole of Mykolaiv Oblast has returned to the control of Ukraine.
Only part of the Kinburn Spit remains under Russian occupation. Three settlements belonging to Mykolaiv Oblast are located there: Pokrovske, Vasylivka, and Pokrovka.
