The European Commission is working on a new legal mechanism that would allow to apply sanctions against Russian oligarchs to their family members, Politico reported on March 16, citing three EU diplomats.
According to the sources, the EU executive body has informed member states that it is working on criteria for inclusion of family members of Russian oligarchs into sanctions lists.
One diplomat said “sanctions hawks” – Poland and the Baltic states – proposed a similar approach in February.
“The Commission then promised to look into the issue in exchange for Poland dropping its resistance against the bloc's 10th sanctions package at the end of February,” a senior EU diplomat said at the time.
According to the diplomats, the European Commission didn’t provide details on what specific criteria they plan to introduce, or on when these changes may be rolled out.
