President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has called on all member states to provide Ukraine with long-range missile systems and fighter jets, the European Parliament’s press service reported on Feb. 9.

“With the political will to ensure easier trade and with the fastest possible accession process,” she declared, welcoming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the European Parliament.

“With funds for your people, with help in reconstruction, with training for your troops. With military equipment and defence systems you need to win. And, now, States must consider, quickly, as a next step, providing long range [missile] systems and the jets you need to protect the liberty too many have taken for granted.”

According to Metsola, “our response must be proportional to the threat – and the threat is existential.”

The official added the European Union must take concrete measures to ensure the victory of Ukraine and accountability for those who committed war crimes, and for the protection of freedom for all Ukrainians.

On Feb. 8, Zelenskyy made an official visit to the United Kingdom. The Ukrainian president met with PM Rishi Sunak and addressed the Parliament.

After that, he arrived in Paris, France, where he met with French and German leaders Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz respectively.

During the meeting, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine needs Western weapons to end the war unleashed by Russia as soon as possible.

On Feb. 9, the Ukrainian leader visited the EU capital of Brussels, where he is also scheduled to address leaders of the European Council.
