European Union to close air space to Russian planes — head of European Commission
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has announced that the EU will impose a flight ban on all Russian planes due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The EU is banning airplanes registered in Russia or controlled by Russia from landing, taking off or flying over the EU territory, with the ban applying to all Russian planes - including Russian oligarchs’ private jets.
Von der Leyen underlined that the EU will, for the first time in its history, fund the purchase and delivery of weapons to a third country under attack.
“Moreover, the EU will block propaganda coming from the Kremlin-controlled media. State-owned outlets Russia Today and Sputnik, as well as their subsidiaries, will not be able to spread their lies justifying Putin’s war anymore,” Von der Leyen added.
The European Union will also extend sanctions on Belarus. They will be aimed at key areas of the economy and at those citizens of Belarus helping Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.
