Former SBU security service head Ivan Bakanov is involved in criminal proceedings initiated by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) regarding the occupation of the country’s territories, a top official of the President’s Office told NV on March 6.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s childhood playmate and business partner from the Kvartal-95 Studio, a television entertainment production company, has been blamed for the SBU’s failures in the pre-war and initial period of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
For example, concerns have been raised over the infiltration of Russian agents in the country’s key power structures, in particular, Oleh Kulinich, the former head of one of a special service department, who is suspected of treason.
“The war exposed everything that happens in the SBU,” the official said.
“And the President’s Office was horrified by the way Bakanov managed (the service). It’s a fiasco in many ways.”
According to the official, Bakanov is now a suspect in several criminal cases.
However, the official refused to disclose the details of the investigation.
