Female professionals targeted for the draft in updated rules
Women in Ukraine could be getting called up to the military after the government updated the list of professions that qualify for the draft, which now includes programmer, doctor, lawyer, journalist, and many others.
Women aged 18 to 60 working in the listed professions who are fit for military service are eligible for the draft under a government decree issued on Oct. 11, which came into force on Dec. 17.
Employers in these professions will have to make sure that their female employees are registered for military service. Women will also need to show proof of their registration when starting a new job, with those who refuse to comply with the new law possibly facing a fine.
Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Defense for Ukraine Nataliya Voronkova told Hromadske Radio that the process for female conscription would be finalized by the end of next week.
“We’re looking to finalize the process and upload it to conscription office websites by the end of next week,” Voronkova said.
“We’re hoping to set up an online registration process, but we’ll see how it works out in terms of data protection. I will be in touch with conscription offices to draw up a quick procedure. We don’t want everyone to end up at the conscription office at once.”
