Less than 5,000 civilians remain in Bakhmut, the town at the frontlines in Donetsk Oblast, regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on national television on Feb. 14.
Approximately 1,000 people fled the town last week, he noted, adding that 140 children remain amongst the civilian population.
"We need to minimize the number of people in Bakhmut,” he stated.
“As for now, there are less than 5,000 people.”
He explained that only people with passes can enter or leave the town as Ukrainian soldiers have to focus their efforts on preparing defense lines.
Before the Russian full-scale invasion, the population of Bakhmut was over 70,000 people.
37 instances of combat were recorded in the Bakhmut area on Feb. 13, including 17 near Bakhmut itself.
