A man opened fire with an automatic rifle from an apartment in the Georgian city of Sagareo, killing five and injuring five, and then turned his gun on himself, the Georgian Interior Ministry reported early on Jan. 20.
Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri said a police officer, who arrived at the scene of the shooting was also killed.
The shooter, a 49-year-old man, was a former Georgian soldier who served from 2006-2021, including in Afghanistan, the minister said.
Authorities are investigating the incident; the motive of the shooter is unclear.
When police broke into the shooter's apartment, they found him unconscious with a head wound, the interior minister added.
