Five Ukrainian citizens could be trapped under debris after the devastating earthquake in Turkey, Spokesperson for Ukraine's Foreign Affairs Ministry Oleg Nikolenko wrote on Facebook on Feb. 9.

"We have information about five Ukrainians who are probably trapped under debris,” he said.

“The Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Embassy are working together with the Turkish authorities to rescue them.”

According to the spokesperson, one Ukrainian woman rescued from the affected area has been taken to the hospital, but her life is not in danger.

In total, Ukrainian diplomats have located 103 Ukrainians in the affected areas. Another twenty-two more Ukrainians remain out of contact.

Nikolenko added that Ukrainian consuls had left for the disaster-struck area in southern Turkey to provide assistance.

The diplomats took warm clothes, medicines, and other necessities, and will coordinate a rescue and search operation for Ukrainian nationals, providing medical care and evacuation at the spot.

On Feb. 6, a series of earthquakes hit the border area between Turkey and Syria. It was one of the most powerful and devastating earthquakes in the past century, reaching magnitudes of 7.8.

A state of emergency was introduced in ten Turkish provinces, lasting for three months.

According to the latest reports, over 16,000 people been reported dead so far in Turkey and Syria as the aftermath of the earthquake.
