Imprisoned former Belarusian presidential candidate Viktar Babaryka has been hospitalized in the surgical department of Novopolotsk’s central hospital, his headquarters and the Rabochy Rukh association reported on April 27.
Babaryka was brought from Penal Colony No. 1 during the night of April 24-25 with multiple bodily injuries, reported Rabochy Rukh, and is reportedly in moderate condition.
Hospital staff claim they did not recognize him, likely due to his injuries, until they saw his name in the documents.
Rabochy Rukh writes that the political prisoner is suffering from a pneumothorax (collapsed lung).
Opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya demands to see Babaryka’s condition, as well as to allow his relatives and a lawyer to visit him.
Viktar Babaryka was sentenced to 14 years in prison in July 2021.
After presidential campaign started, he was placed in a pre-trial detention center and accused of money laundering, tax evasion, and bribery.
Barbaryka pleaded not guilty.
