Retired German General Erhard Bühler has called for faster Western military assistance to Ukraine, including the delivery of F-16 fighter jets, German newspaper Bild reported on April 23.
Bühler said Ukraine needs "more ammunition for air defense and combat aircraft."
The general said he was specifically referring to "American F-16 fighters, of which there are a huge number in the world.
"However, Bühler stressed that the F-16 was "just an example."
“The issue (overall) is giving Ukrainians the opportunity to ensure the security of their country in the long run," he said.
Earlier, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said a positive decision on the transfer of modern fighter aircraft to Ukraine could come in a matter of one to two months.
Before that, Ukrainian Air Force Aviation Commander Serhiy Holubtsov said on March 20 that Ukrainian pilots would be able to learn to fly F-16s in less than six months.
