France will train up to 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers at its training grounds and promises to increase its military assistance, Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu told French newspaper Le Parisien on Oct. 15.
According to the official, Ukrainian military will be assigned to French units for several weeks. The training will focus on three levels:
- general combat training;
- "specific needs reported by the Ukrainians, such as logistics";
- training on military equipment provided by France.
Lecornu also mentioned the Crotale short-range air defense missile systems, which France has promised to provide to Ukraine. According to him, the number "is being agreed with the Ukrainians, but it will be substantial, to allow them to defend their skies".
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the creation of a special fund for the purchase of weapons to be transferred to Ukraine and said he was considering providing Ukraine with 12 new Caesar howitzers.
The BBC previously reported that Paris may give Kyiv three French analogs of the HIMARS rocket system.
