Kremlin confirms meeting between Putin and former German Chancellor Schröder

Vladimir Putin met with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, a longtime associate of the Kremlin leader, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said on June 5.
According to Ushakov, the talks were held one-on-one. He described the meeting as "cordial and friendly."
"The conversation was friendly. It took place in a one-on-one format, face-to-face. To be honest, I do not know the details. It took place in Moscow, at the Kremlin," Ushakov said.
On May 9, Putin proposed involving former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who is widely viewed as pro-Russian, as a European Union mediator in negotiations aimed at ending the war. Ukraine opposed the proposal, and both Berlin and the EU rejected the idea.
On June 2, media outlets spotted the 82-year-old Schröder in Moscow for the first time since 2022. Reports linked the visit to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which is taking place from June 3-6.
Gerhard Schröder served as Germany's chancellor from Oct. 27, 1998, to Nov. 22, 2005. He chairs the shareholders' committee of Nord Stream AG, the company behind the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, and serves on the board of Russia's Gazprom. Schröder is widely regarded as a personal friend of Putin.
