Ukrainian troops are training to operate 155mm self-propelled howitzers that Germany will provide to Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in a Facebook video on May 15.

These artillery pieces will become the first shipment of German heavy weapon systems to Ukraine, he said.

“This is an extremely important moment in our relationship, since it will be the first time Germany has provided Ukraine with heavy weapons,” said Kuleba.

“These howitzers will soon be smashing the invaders who are rampaging across our land.”

The minister said that “the first psychological barrier” has been broken, and he is now in talks with German officials about other armaments Berlin can help Ukraine with.

However, Germany will have the final say on the nature and schedule of military aid to Ukraine, Kuleba said.

Earlier, German newspaper Die Welt reported that certain disagreements within the German government were stalling the expansion of German military assistance to Kyiv.

On April 28, the German parliament overwhelmingly voted in support of providing Ukraine with heavy weapons.

After weeks of delays, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has now said that Germany will arm Ukraine in its war to defeat the full-scale Russian invasion.
