Greece will give Ukraine around 100 BMP-1s – Soviet-era infantry fighting vehicles – once German Marders arrive as their replacement, German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported on June 6.
Quoting a Greek government official, DW suggests this condition is due to building tensions between Greece and Turkey. The Greek armed forces are on high alert because of Ankara’s territorial claims on a number of Greek islands, which have recently resurfaced.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he discussed supplying Marders in the BMP-1s’ stead with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
