Germany’s new Defense Minister Boris Pistorius “broke Berlin’s restraint” on weapons for Ukraine, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister and former ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk said in an interview with the Ukrainska Pravda online newspaper on Feb. 22.
“Mr. Pistorius is a completely different format from Ms. Lambrecht (his predecessor),” Melnyk said.
“I think he wants to go down in history as someone who broke this Berlin’s restraint (on supplying weapons for Ukraine). And we can see that it is thanks to his leadership position within the government that this ice is beginning to melt.”
According to Melnyk, in the few weeks since Pistorius assumed office, he has managed to become the most popular politician in Germany thanks to his decisions.
“This choice (of the defense minister) is not just successful, but super successful,” the diplomat said.
Pistorius, who is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, was appointed Germany’s Federal Minister of Defense in January 2023.
His predecessor, Christine Lambrecht, officially filed a resignation notice with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Jan. 16, and he accepted it the same day.
In a statement, she made it clear that her decision was due to several scandals, including criticism of her actions on the modernization programs of the German army and the supply of weapons to Ukraine.
